A trans-abdominal ultrasound is a medical procedure that uses a device (transducer) that is moved along the abdomen sending sound waves through the uterus. These sound waves bounce off the baby in the form of echoes. A computer picks up the echo messages and translates them onto the screen. It is best to have a full bladder for a trans-abdominal ultrasound because sound waves move more easily through liquid than air. In addition a full bladder elevates the uterus toward your belly button (if you have an anteverted uterus) making it have a flatter surface, hence a clearer image/visualization.

Our clinic offers trans-abdominal and transvaginal ultrasounds, incorporating the ALARA safety principle (as low as reasonable achievable). Limited obstetrical ultrasound examinations will not diagnose gender, fetal abnormalities, and/or problems. If you are experiencing cramping or bleeding, we will not be able to offer an ultrasound exam. As you prepare for your ultrasound appointment, please bring your photo ID. If you have young children, please arrange for child care or bring someone to watch them during your visit. Your support person is welcome to come with you to your appointment whether it be a significant other, friend, or family member.
